Travelling the world and fixing the bikes of the fastest riders would seem wonderful job to several, but for Giant-Alpecin repair shop employee Alex Ritze, it’s time for a new career. The friendly German mechanic arrived in Australia on any one-way ticket, seeking a new start.
Originally from the city of Erfurt, Ritze has spent the last four years wrenching for the Giant bikes of the team now referred to as Giant-Alpecin. When not servcing the wants of famous riders, he’s an aggressive bike polo person, something he jokingly calls, “hipster hockey”.
“I’ve been with what was previously Argos-Shimano since 2012; I’d been a mechanic from the ladies racing for several years or so just before that. At the period, I was with Girona. I didn’t love it and was ready for something else. I acquired the call in the team and that’s where I’ve been considering that, ” says Ritze.
“Before becoming a contest mechanic, I was doing work in a bike store. I started as I was at classes and continued full-time approximately five years.
I began to help out at races, it got a growing number of and then I acquired offered a career. It’s a common story in the profession, you start by simply helping out, and then at some point you’re ‘in’. ”
We ask Ritze if you will discover any riders he’s found much harder, or typically fussier to use.
“We didn’t hold the boys with superstar attitudes, ” says Ritze of the team, before ongoing. “They’re all effortless and friendly nice guys. Some are more picky or challenging than others, but it’s a normal thing.”
One of several challenges in as a pro cyclist or associated employee is so often being abroad. Ritze was informed his season would start early from the year and conclude by mid-April.
That time would encompass approximately one hundred eighty to 200 days traveling. Ritze says he has been enjoyed the vacation, and didn’t have a very family or partner looking forward to him back household.
“I have simply no regrets of our experience, ” says Ritze of the past decade. “If you enjoy travel and like to work on motorcycles, then for sure it’s an excellent job. ”
“I got taking that approach to call Jesse once we met last year for the Tour Down Beneath. We stayed in touch, and I thought I possibly could ask him and he’ll say no. I really had nothing to get rid of, ” Ritze affirms.
For anyone hoping to follow in Ritze’s footsteps, he provides an insight that was not hugely surprising but is really a little daunting: “The items that make a excellent race mechanic are generally time management, proficiency and precision. You don’t make mistakes!
“The work you do repeats many periods, and the bikes are almost the exact same. You have to be focused even the task is repeating. From a hardware standpoint, you have to be a good repair shop, but a standard day involves more maintenance, checking along with cleaning.

“Alex suggested migrating to Australia to become listed on forces here inside my workshop. Being immersed from the WorldTour for so long has enabled your pet to pinpoint issues and areas that require development and, therefore, he’s already produced her own unique tools and aims to help expand develop these ideas with me, ” says Geiser.
“I’m excited and honoured to own him make this huge go on to Australia to come and talk with me, and I’m really looking forward to the process of collaboration along with the potential of what it could actually yield, ” they concludes.
